Common problems booking a DGT exchange appointment

Keep in mind:

• Turning up at the traffic office without an appointment is very risky: you may not be seen at all.
• Appointments have been hard to get lately; offices are not granting them easily.
• If additional documents are requested, you will have to book a new appointment.
• If the office is far from home, every extra visit is wasted time and resources.

How long is the wait?

Waiting times vary by location, season and demand. In busy areas like Madrid or Barcelona it is wise to plan several weeks ahead.

The process, step by step

• Gather the documents: original licence, passport or ID, medical certificate and, in some cases, a criminal-record certificate.
• Book a prior appointment with the DGT (official website or phone).
• Attend the appointment on time with all documents and the booking receipt.
• Pay the corresponding administrative fees.
• Hand in your original foreign driving licence.
• Receive your new Spanish driving licence.
